چکیده

This study was performed to evaluate the in vitro activity of the amphibian peptide aurein 1.2 and to investigate its interaction with six antibiotics against nosocomial gram-positive cocci. All isolates were inhibited at concentrations of 1 to 16 mg/liter. Synergy was demonstrated when aurein 1.2 was combined with clarithromycin and minocycline.

In vitro activity of LY333328 (oritavancin) against Gram-positive aerobic cocci and synergy with ciprofloxacin against enterococci.

Gram-positive cocci are a major cause of nosocomial bacteraemias and are often resistant to most antibiotics. The emergence of enterococci with reduced susceptibility to vancomycin has created an urgent need for novel antibiotics to combat infections associated with these bacteria. In this study the in vitro activity of LY333328 (oritavancin), a semi-synthetic glycopeptide, was evaluated. LY333...

Effect of Medium pH on Antibiotic Activity against Syrian Brucella spp. Isolates

Background: Brucellosis is an endemic zoonosis in Syria, affecting large numbers of animals. There are an increasing number of cases in humans. Brucella is a facultative intracellular pathogen, a small, non-motile, Gram-negative coccobacillus, which causes abortion in domestic animals and a febrile illness in humans. Methods: One hundred isolates collected from different Syrian regions were con...

In vitro activity and killing effect of uperin 3.6 against gram-positive cocci isolated from immunocompromised patients.

The in vitro activity of uperin 3.6, alone or combined with six antibiotics, against gram-positive cocci, including Rhodococcus equi, methicillin-resistant staphylococci, and vancomycin-resistant enterococci, was investigated. All isolates were inhibited at concentrations of 1 to 16 mg/liter. Synergy was demonstrated when uperin 3.6 was combined with clarithromycin and doxycycline.

Comparative in vitro study of teichomycin A2.

Teichomycin A2 was evaluated in vitro against clinical isolates, and its activity was compared with that of other antibiotics. This compound was very active against all organisms tested; its activity was comparable to that of vancomycin, and it was superior to several other antibiotics when tested against gram-positive cocci. Because of its in vitro activity, it deserves clinical evaluation.

Reliability of Disk Diffusion Test Results for the Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing of Nosocomial Gram-positive Microorganisms: Is E-test Method Better?

Disk diffusion test is the usual applicable method for assessing the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern in most institutions and hospitals. The aim of this study was to determine the reliability of resistant-reported results of disk diffusion test for 6 routinely used antibiotics against Gram-positive microorganisms of nosocomial origin, using E-test method.    Over a 1-year period, clinic...
